Eric, and William locate a hidden staircase below a sarcophagus in the
storeroom. Beneith it is a room designed to look like an Egyptian
temple, several crates, and bookshelves. They can't read the hieroglyphics
on the walls, but find that at least one of the books contains a great
deal of praise to "Nyarlathotep". Inside the crates are hideous statues
of terrible beings. They find the alter can be moves and push it
over, breaking it. Beneith it they find several more artifacts.
This group gathers what they can carry from the room and leaves.
While they're doing that Alex, Allen, and Sebastian are awoken by someone
in the hotel shouting about a fire. Alexander opens his door to be
confronted by three thugs and Allen tries to help him with them.
They flee saying that they've already got one. Sebastian sees an
area of green fire moving down the hall and flees from it. When Alexander
tries to go back for his stuff, it chases him as far as the top of the
stairs. Everyone manages to evacuate safely. Our new group
tries to inform the police of Roland's kidnapping but then see the officer
they spoke with go and talk with a shadowy figure. In pursuit of
him, Alexander has to suddenly stop because he can't breathe. At
his feet they find a package containing a mouse that has had internal organs
removed. The figure now has a huge lead, but they try to catch up
with him anyways. He eludes the pursuers and they decide to head
to the Penhew Foundation to try to warn the other group. After considdering
breaking in the front, they head around back and find the other group leaving.
The group that broke into the offices want to flee immediately and they
decide to go to Alexander's small apartment. Allen is unwilling to
have anything more to do with this and goes to his own hotel. The
investigators try to puzzle out what happened and what any of the stuff
they found means. Allen finds that the lungs of the mouse had been
removed and goes to sleep. He is awoken in the dark by someone who
wants to know where the investigators went. After a brief interigation,
they leave and Allen follows them to try and get a good look at them.
He spots one of them speaking with someone on a telephone and they leave.
Then Allen tries to get the manager to call the police so that Alexander
may have some warning about the possible attack. He then goes out
to get a taxi which fortunately is one that gave half the group the ride
last night and goes to Alexander's apartment himself. The group at
the Apartment feels like someone is watching them, but can't spot anyone
on the street. Early in the morning the police knock on the door
and they have to hide all the stuff they stole from Gavigan's office.
When they answer the door they find Gavigan has accompanied the police
and they are looking for money stolen from the safe in his office.
After searching the investigators as a courtisy to Gavigan and being satisfied
that they don't have any of the money, Gavigan has to leave. Allen
arrives then and recognizes Gavigan as one of the men who interigated him
in his hotel room. After a brief confrontation, the investigators
continue to try to figure out what the things are by reading the strange
and evil books stolen from the Foundation. No convenient information
leading to Roland is found, so they decide to go to the Scoop and see what
information they can provide. Before leaving, they want to examine
the contents of a vial found in the temple so Allen dons rubber gloves,
gets out tongs to hold the vial away from him with, and carefully pulls
the cap off the vial while everyone else stands as far away from him as
they can. Inside the vial is a powder which Allen carefully gets
a sample of to get tested.
