[Nick Johnson]: Anything of note next to Madam Larina? Like a small table or anything? [Keeper]: The table that you got the drinks from is in the corner of the room, but it'son the far side of Madam Larina [Nick Johnson]: Is the room carpeted? [Keeper]: No, it is a hard wood floor [Keeper]: Simon sits to the left of Madam Larina, while Thomas sits next to him [Keeper]: Madam Larina: If you would be seated Mr. Hutz Early Hutz sits across from Madam Larina [Keeper]: Madam Larina calls her assistant Mr. Woollon into the room [Keeper]: Madam Larina: We're ready to begin now, Mr. Woollon [Keeper]: Woollon, leaves momentarily and comes back with a handful of props. A tamborine, a trumpet, and a small silver bowl [Keeper]: He places those in the center of the table [Early Hutz]: "May we look at these, Madam?" [Keeper]: Madam Larina: That will be all for now, please dim the lights Mr. Woollon and you are excused. [Keeper]: Madam Larina: Of course! Please continue." [William Hollis]: everything looks fine to me, please do continue Madam. [Keeper]: The light is now turned down to almost pitch black [Keeper]: Madam Larina produces a small candel which she lights and sets in the bowl which is the middle of the table Nick Johnson intently watches Madam Larina, as best he can Bernard Tremblay looks furtively under the table [Keeper]: Madam Larina: This is a strong night for the spirits. I sense many of them around us. [Keeper]: You hear a rapping sound Nick Johnson wactches Madam Larina closely William Hollis tries to locate where the sound is coming from Bernard Tremblay tries to locate the sound Nick Johnson tries to locate the sound [Keeper]: You cannot identify the location of the sound [Keeper]: Madam Larina: Spirits can you show us your presence? [Keeper]: There's another set of raps [Keeper]: Then a few moments of silence before the tamborine shakes a bit [Keeper]: Madam Larina: Is there anyone that you would like me to contact for you Mr. Tremblay? [Bernard Tremblay]: well... [Bernard Tremblay]: i got a dead uncle i was very found of [Keeper]: Madam Larina: What was his name? [Bernard Tremblay]: let me "summon" him in my thoughts [Bernard Tremblay]: his name was Michel Tremblay [Keeper]: Madam Larina: Do you have token of his, something that belonged to him on you? [Bernard Tremblay]: no, sorry [Bernard Tremblay]: he died in the great war [Keeper]: Madam Larina: I will see what I can do. MICHEL TREMBLAY, ARE YOU THERE! [Keeper]: There's one quiet rap Bernard Tremblay listens closely [Keeper]: Madam Larina: Please speak to your nephew Bernard. [Keeper]: Madam Larina: Mr. Tremblay, please pick up the trumpet and place the bell against your ear. Bernard Tremblay complies William Hollis keeps his eyes focused on Madam Larina (Keeper whispered to Bernard Tremblay): You faintly hear a raspy whisper say "Can you hear me"? Bernard Tremblay exclaims: I can hear him! [William Hollis]: "what is he saying?" [Bernard Tremblay]: he's asking if i could hear him (Keeper whispered to Bernard Tremblay): The whisper continues "You were my favorite relative when I was among the living" [Bernard Tremblay]: is that so, uncle? [Bernard Tremblay]: why did you leave us so far from home, uncle? (Keeper whispered to Bernard Tremblay): "I did what I had to. I was a soldier and did my duty." (Keeper whispered to Bernard Tremblay): "I was proud of what I did and have no regrets." [Bernard Tremblay]: you should have stayed in Quebec... (Keeper whispered to Bernard Tremblay): "I grow weak, visit my grave again soon. I can hear you when you talk to me there." William Hollis foucuses his attention on the trumpet [Bernard Tremblay]: I will do so, uncle [Keeper]: Madam Larina: The spirit has passed on again [Keeper]: Roll, William Bernard Tremblay places the trumpet back on the table [Keeper]: Madam Larina: Is there anyone else who would like to contact someone [Early Hutz]: I wouldn't mind talking to my Pop. I got some questions [Keeper]: Madam Larina: Very well, do you have a token of his? [Early Hutz]: Yes. I have his pocketwatch - it won't get damaged, will it? [Keeper]: Madam Larina: I will need to have you put it in the bowl. It might get a bit of candle wax on it, but it should otherwise be unharmed. [Early Hutz]: OK Early Hutz places watch in bowl [Keeper]: Madam Larina: Is the spirit connected with this watch here? [Keeper]: The tamborine shakes violently [Keeper]: Madam Larina: Mr. Hutz, please place the trumpet against your ear as you saw Mr. Tremblay do. Early Hutz does so [Early Hutz]: I can, pop. [Early Hutz]: Was it really a heart attack like that doctor said? [Early Hutz]: I've been thinking it was your partner . . . . [Early Hutz]: I got it. You watch over Momma, you hear? [Early Hutz]: To group: "he says the Scotch is better in heaven!" Bernard Tremblay smiles [Keeper]: Madam Larina: The spirit has departed. Please return the trumpet to the table [Nick Johnson]: If it wasn't there'd be no point in going Early Hutz returns trumpet [Keeper]: Madam Larina: Is there anyone else who would wish to speak to one of the departed Early Hutz reaches for watch. "May I?" to Madam L. [Keeper]: Madam Larina: Of course. Early Hutz takes watch [Keeper]: Madam Larina: Very well, if there is no one else then... uh.. [Keeper]: She suddenly starts having a violent fit [Keeper]: Her hands never leave the table but she thrashes about in the chair [Keeper]: You see whispy white vapers come out of her nose and ears Bernard Tremblay stands and runs to remove her hands from the table Nick Johnson looks at her nose and ears [Keeper]: Madam Larina: REMAIN SEATED! It's the ectoplasm of the spirits! Bernard Tremblay stops abruptly and returns to his seat [Keeper]: Suddenly there's a bright light and everyone's blinded by the glare [Keeper]: As the spots begin to clear you see that there was a man dressed entirely in black who was placing white gause into her ear Bernard Tremblay exclaims: Treachery! [William Hollis]: "what happened?" [Nick Johnson]: : stands up and tries to grab the man [Keeper]: Mr. Harris stands and he's holding a flashlight Nick Johnson also whips out his flashlight Early Hutz puts hand in large coat pocket [Keeper]: Harris: "Well, Madam Larina, or whoever you are. It looks like another fraud." [Keeper]: Simon is furious with Harris. "Lime, how dare you! You told me wanted to see a real medium and I provided one." Nick Johnson flips on his light and walks over to the door where the assistant came from Bernard Tremblay is ashamed that he believed YET another fraud... [Keeper]: "Thomas Harris" removes a fake mustach. "How many times must I tell you there are no 'real mediums'" Nick Johnson knocks on the door "Mr Woollon could you join us?" [Keeper]: Everyone roll a quick one for me DICE for Early Hutz: (1d100) : 1d100=68 = [ 68 ] DICE for Nick Johnson: (1d100) : 1d100=33 = [ 33 ] DICE for Bernard Tremblay: (1d100) : 1d100=57 = [ 57 ] DICE for William Hollis: (1d100) : 1d100=44 = [ 44 ] [Keeper]: The man in black removes his hood and it is Mr. Wooloon [Keeper]: Woollon [William Hollis]: "Explain yourself Mr. Woollon." Nick Johnson walks over to the light switch and flips on the lights [Keeper]: All of you now recognize "Thomas Harris" as Blake Lime, internationally famous stage magician and exposer of fradualant spiritualists [Bernard Tremblay]: aren't you ashamed at all?? [Keeper]: Madam Larina: Of what? My powers are genuine. [Nick Johnson]: Indeed? [Bernard Tremblay]: if thst's so, why all this deception? [Keeper]: Madam Larina: I can't do the ectoplasm stunt that everyone is expecting these days. That doesn't mean my other abilities are false [Nick Johnson]: But it hardly gives you credibility William Hollis walks over to the trumpet , picks it up and examines it again [Bernard Tremblay]: well, it hurts you more than it helps you... [Keeper]: Lime: Well, I've got enough to ensure my next performance is a packed house. So long, Simon, Madam. [Keeper]: He departs [Keeper]: Roll for me William Nick Johnson looks under the table [Keeper]: It is an ordinary trumpet. Something else must have been part of the trick Bernard Tremblay stands and goes to check behind the curtains all around the room [Keeper]: Roll Nick DICE for Nick Johnson: (1d100) : 1d100=76 = [ 76 ] [Keeper]: Bernard, you find a niche filled with supplies like thick black paper, a bit of fine wire, and more white cloth. [William Hollis]: Is there anything under the table Nick? Bernard Tremblay gathers that stuff and throws it on the table [Bernard Tremblay]: what's this, madame? [Keeper]: Nick, you find that the leg of the table near Madam Larina's seat makes a rapping sound when pushed on [Nick Johnson]: The spirits are with us indeed. [Keeper]: Madam Larina: I don't have to answer any more of your skeptical questions. [William Hollis]: "So she is a fraud." [Keeper]: She storms out [Early Hutz]: Well, there goes another piece for the magazine. [Keeper]: Simon: I hate it when he's right. I never hear the end of it. [Keeper]: Simon: Well, I can give you another one at least [Nick Johnson]: Mr Woollon, a question? (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Keeper): am i certain it was my uncle's voice? [Keeper]: Woollon: Sure, this job's blown (Keeper whispered to Bernard Tremblay): You can't be certain [Nick Johnson]: How many jobs have you done with Madam? (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Keeper): ahh, ok, should have asked before :) [Keeper]: Woollon: Well, we toured Europe and that was at least twice a week for eight months. [Nick Johnson]: Always using props? [Bernard Tremblay]: have you ever seen anything at all that was strange? [Keeper]: Woollon: Yep. The black paper was so I could talk into the trumpet without anyone seeing me [Nick Johnson]: Right [William Hollis]: Mr. Woollon, do you know what the "other abilities" are that she spoke of? [Keeper]: Woollon, there was this two headed pig in Bavaria... Bernard Tremblay sighs [Nick Johnson]: The wire was used to rattle the tamborine? [Nick Johnson]: Right, William, I am curious about that. [Keeper]: Woollon: She was probably talking about her ability at self promotion. This isn't the first time she was caught [Nick Johnson]: I'm not surprised. This is not the best hack job I've seen. [Keeper]: Woollon: Yup, had to be careful to get it inbetween you [Keeper]: Simon: Well, to make up for this dreadful evening why don't you come to my Halloween party next Friday. It's a costumed affair and we're having a spiritualist that I understand Sir Aurthur Conan Doyle himself swears by [Early Hutz]: Will Lime be attending? [Bernard Tremblay]: well, can't be worse than this, can it? :) [Keeper]: Simon: Not after what he did this evening [William Hollis]: i sure hope not [Nick Johnson]: Simon, you never cease to amaze me, but I'll be there. [Nick Johnson]: Simon, why are you so upset with Lime? [Keeper]: Simon: It's being held at my Great Uncle's place a few hours upstate. [Early Hutz]: I'll see if I can dig up a costume. Is there a theme? [Bernard Tremblay]: simon, next time i take a day off to see a medium, just shoot me, will ya? :) [Keeper]: Simon: He told me he wanted to see a real medium and I brough Madam Larina in. Now he's driven her off with his methods. [Nick Johnson]: So your convinced she is still a real medium? [Keeper]: Simon: No theme to the party, but my Uncle's home is rumored to be haunted. I never visitted it as a child, but I've heard tales of the strange things that happen there [Keeper]: Simon: Seemed the perfect place for a Halloween party [Bernard Tremblay]: bah... [William Hollis]: Simon, you didn [Early Hutz]: Well, we'd better at least get a story out of it or the next issue is going to be awfully thin. [William Hollis]: didn't answer nick's question [Keeper]: Simon: I suppose I can't now. (He sighs) [Bernard Tremblay]: I'll dress up as a lumberjack, since everyone thinks that's what we all do in Quebec :) [Nick Johnson]: I'd like to talk to Madam Larina some more. [Keeper]: I'll send directions by the office. See you then, Gentlemen [Nick Johnson]: I'm sure the magazine can find something to print. [Keeper]: Simon departs [William Hollis]: that is all they do in Quebec though isn't it? ;) [Keeper]: Madam Larina has left the suite of rooms. You can search for her if you want [Bernard Tremblay]: I got a german story i kept just in case we ran out of stuff [Nick Johnson]: I vote we go have a look for Madam Larina, and talk to her. [Early Hutz]: Are you sure? She seems like a major fraud to me. [Nick Johnson]: Yeah, she does seem like a fraud. [Bernard Tremblay]: that's what i think too, Hutz [William Hollis]: I don't think we should waste any more time here [Nick Johnson]: Mr Woollon, how often did you both get busted? [Keeper]: Simon: Well, I'm sure you and Gerald will be able to come up with something. You always do. [Keeper]: (Gerald is the Editor-in-cheif of Exotic Oddities) [Bernard Tremblay]: (ok) [Keeper]: Woollon: Just twice [Nick Johnson]: Perhaps a story should be done on that, but that's not my department. [Bernard Tremblay]: same here, I'm only a translator, after all [Early Hutz]: We're into proving the occult, not disproving it. Gotta keep the readers happy. [Keeper]: Woollon's gathered his stuff and is preparing to leave [Bernard Tremblay]: You're right, Hutz, but it's still a shame... [Nick Johnson]: So what's next Mr Woolon [William Hollis]: We can always hope something happens at that party next week. [Nick Johnson]: Err Woollon [Bernard Tremblay]: Woollon, Find another carreer, will ya? [Keeper]: Woollon: But the pay's so good with this. [Bernard Tremblay]: Stop abusing people like that [Keeper]: And with that he departs leaving you four alone Bernard Tremblay swears in french [Keeper]: Anything more you gents want to do here or should we move along? [Early Hutz]: I'm done here. [Bernard Tremblay]: same here [William Hollis]: i'm set to go [Keeper]: Nick, how about you? [Nick Johnson]: done [Nick Johnson]: sorry [Keeper]: Alrighty [Keeper]: Well then all of you depart, go home, get a good night's sleep and go on about your week. [Keeper]: Everyone will need to tell me how they're planning on arriving at the party and what costume they're wearing [Nick Johnson]: I'll arrive by my car. Does anyone need a ride? [Early Hutz]: Can anyone give me a ride? I don't have a car. [Nick Johnson]: I do :) [Early Hutz]: Nick! [William Hollis]: i need a ride as well [Nick Johnson]: Oh, and a question. [Bernard Tremblay]: sure, if you want to risk a ride in my old car :) [Keeper]: Go ahead [Nick Johnson]: Early, what do you do for the magazine? [Early Hutz]: Jr. Editor Nick Johnson nods [Early Hutz]: Inspired by Doyle's spiritualist, I'm going as Sherlock Holmes Nick Johnson grins (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Keeper): I will really dress up as a lumberjack :) [William Hollis]: dang, that's what i was going to go as :) (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Keeper): axe not included, of course, lol [Nick Johnson]: I think I'll go as a magician [Early Hutz]: I outrank at the mag, so I get to wear it ;) [Bernard Tremblay]: lol [Bernard Tremblay]: hey, AFK for a couple minutes, i gotta make myself something to eat [Bernard Tremblay]: /afk [Keeper]: Alright. Why don' [Nick Johnson]: we take a breat? [Keeper]: Why don't we all take a short breather [Nick Johnson]: err, break [Removed the break chatter] [Keeper]: Alrighty, if we're ready to move on. William, I still need to know what you're wearing to the party now that Sherlock Holmes isn't an option for you [William Hollis]: ah...okay, a civil war general costume (union) [Nick Johnson]: I'd like to take my .32, a flashlight, and something to pick locks with [Nick Johnson]: Even though I'm not a great lockpicker [Keeper]: Any one else with equipment? [Bernard Tremblay]: hmm [Nick Johnson]: 18 rounds of ammo [Nick Johnson]: I'll just make that my usuall [William Hollis]: just the things i always carry with me, plus my gun and a flashlight [Bernard Tremblay]: i won't bring my gun, it's a party, after all [William Hollis]: (gun for part of my costume [Early Hutz]: .32, pocket knife, magnifying glass (costume), watch [Nick Johnson]: I'm leaving mine in the car [Keeper]: William, does your costume include the sabre? [William Hollis]: yes [Bernard Tremblay]: i'll bring a notepad and a couple pencils [Nick Johnson]: Mine is the cliche cain, cape, tophat, black [Nick Johnson]: And the inside of the cape is red :) [Early Hutz]: Classy! [Keeper]: Alright. If you're all ready then... [Nick Johnson]: I'm taking Early? [Early Hutz]: Yes, please. [Keeper]: It's a fairly long drive out to Simon's party. [Bernard Tremblay]: really? [Bernard Tremblay]: i hope my car doesn't break down, AGAIN :) [Keeper]: Nick, you're running on empty when you reach the last town before you get to the country house [Nick Johnson]: Ok, I'll gas up [Keeper]: Bernard, for the sake of simplicity, you're following him. [Bernard Tremblay]: allright [Keeper]: The gas station is done up for Halloween and an attendant wearing a pumpkin on his head runs out [Keeper]: "Check your oil, sir?" [Nick Johnson]: Yes, and fill her up [Bernard Tremblay]: same here, boy [Keeper]: You got it. [Nick Johnson]: Is that a real pumpkin on your head? [Keeper]: The attendant goes on to fill up everyone's gas tank, wipe the windows, check the oil level... Bernard Tremblay laughs [Keeper]: "Nope, cardboard." [Keeper]: "But people around hear expect it on Halloween, given the town." [Nick Johnson]: Tell me about the town [Keeper]: Everyone give me a roll [William Hollis]: "that reminds me, i hope they have some pumpkin pie at the party" DICE for Nick Johnson: (1d100) : 1d100=46 = [ 46 ] DICE for Early Hutz: (1d100) : 1d100=30 = [ 30 ] DICE for Bernard Tremblay: (1d100) : 1d100=6 = [ 6 ] DICE for William Hollis: (1d100) : 1d100=83 = [ 83 ] [Keeper]: "Didn't you notice the sign? You're in Sleepy Hollow, made world famous by the story!" [Keeper]: Never mind guys, he asked. [Nick Johnson]: What do you know about the estate we are going to? [Early Hutz]: (with a smirk) ever seen the horseman? [Bernard Tremblay]: wow, i didn't realize this was the town... [Keeper]: "Nobody's lived there for years. Been abandoned as long as I've been around." [William Hollis]: "why has it been abandoned?" [Keeper]: "Well, once a year we have someone recreate the scene for kids, but this is the town." [Keeper]: "Don't know, just been that way. Nobody ever goes there and there's the usual stories of ghosts, but you come to expect that in these parts." Bernard Tremblay nods [Nick Johnson]: Any stories that stand out? [Nick Johnson]: Like did anyone die there? [Keeper]: "There's a story that the guy who lived there killed his whole family and if you stand at the top of the steps he'll try to push you down as well." William Hollis takes out his notebook and writes down the info Bernard Tremblay does the same [Keeper]: "But then there's a story that he lived alone and never died." Nick Johnson smiles Bernard Tremblay scratches what he wrote [William Hollis]: "Hmm....interesting" [Bernard Tremblay]: hehe [Keeper]: "What you writing this down for?" [Bernard Tremblay]: just for kicks [Early Hutz]: We're in the magazine business. Never know when a good story is going to hit. [William Hollis]: just in case it comes in handy for a story or something [Nick Johnson]: The owner of the magazine is throwing the party [Nick Johnson]: On the estate [Keeper]: "Well that's it. It'll be $2 for each of you." Nick Johnson forks over $2 Early Hutz pays up [Bernard Tremblay]: ok, here's a 10 cents tip, my boyu [Bernard Tremblay]: boy, even [Keeper]: "Thank you much, sir. Have fun at the party." [Bernard Tremblay]: thanks, and have a good day [Keeper]: Everyone set? [Nick Johnson]: Yes [Early Hutz]: yep [William Hollis]: yeah Bernard Tremblay nods [Keeper]: Okay then.. The sun is just beginning to set as you pull up to the country house. It's not quite what you were expecting. [Keeper]: For one thing it's smaller than you thought that a place for a party being held by Simon would be. [Keeper]: Another thing you notice is the house is oddly constructed with the front half being wooden and the back half (which you can see on the approach) is made of stone [Nick Johnson]: How many cars are present? [Bernard Tremblay]: hmm, the front part was added later, maybe? [Keeper]: There's perhaps a dozen cars here. [Nick Johnson]: I think so, Bernard [Nick Johnson]: Can I go examine where the split is? [Keeper]: If you like [Bernard Tremblay]: i'll tag along Nick Johnson walks over and examines the split [Keeper]: For the moment, the front door is standing open and you can see movement within [William Hollis]: can i tell about how many rooms there are? [Keeper]: It's a pretty clean join with the wood being worked into the stone fairly smoothly. Early Hutz looks at the visible partygoers [Nick Johnson]: Well, gentlemen, shall we enter? [Keeper]: In some sections it seems like the stone was set for the beams and in other that the beams were placed where they could with the stone Bernard Tremblay nods [Early Hutz]: I think so. I could use a drink. [William Hollis]: let's go [Keeper]: As you approach the front door Simon walks out of it. [Keeper]: [Nick Johnson]: Hello Simon [Keeper]: Glad you're all finally here. I was getting worried you wouldn't make it. [Nick Johnson]: We had to gas up [Nick Johnson]: In Sleepy Hollow [Early Hutz]: "Simon! You don't think we'd miss your party, would we?" [Bernard Tremblay]: how is Simon dressed? [Keeper]: Simon: Seems someone was spreading rumors about the party and the hauntings and many of my guests cancelled [Keeper]: Simon is dressed as Roman Emporer. Almost exactly what you would expect from him. [Early Hutz]: Well, that's certainly not going to make us cancel. It's good for business. Bernard Tremblay agrees [Nick Johnson]: The gas station attendant had a few stories for us [William Hollis]: "Is there any truth to the hauntings, Simon?" [Keeper]: Simon: I hope so Nick Johnson laughs [Bernard Tremblay]: hehe William Hollis smiles [Keeper]: Simon: It would make the party that much more interesting [Nick Johnson]: Simon, I want to ask about the archetecture [Keeper]: Certainly, but why don't you all step inside and get your drinks first [Early Hutz]: And I want to ask about your Scotch selection. [Nick Johnson]: Sounds good Nick Johnson Enters front door and looks around [Keeper]: Simon: The drinks are in the dining room which is to the right as you enter Early Hutz goes and gets a drink Bernard Tremblay enters and locates the drinks and fixes himself a whiskey William Hollis makes himself a gin and tonic [Keeper]: The front room is a pretty small living room. Much of the furnature is new, apparently Simon had to replace some peices for the party. A stairway heads up on the right hand side and next to that is an open path to the dining room Nick Johnson enters the dining room and fixes a scotch William Hollis looks up the stairway [Nick Johnson]: neat, of course :) [Bernard Tremblay]: is that the stairway that we should not use? :) [Keeper]: You hear Simon greeting another pair of guests and he mentions that it looks like they'll be the last [Keeper]: Simon calls out: Don't worry, you have the run of the house [Early Hutz]: Who wants to stand on top of the stairs first? [Keeper]: Up the stairs is a hallway [Bernard Tremblay]: no, i meant if we use it your uncle will throw us to the bottom :) Bernard Tremblay laughs [Keeper]: You notice that there is no electricity here William Hollis walks up the stairs [Keeper]: Everything is lit by oil lamps or candels [Keeper]: Hollis, roll for me Bernard Tremblay prepares to catch will at the bottom of the stairs William Hollis gets to the top and looks around down the hallway Early Hutz follows william up the stairs Nick Johnson looks around the dining room [Keeper]: Well, William doesn't fall. Bernard Tremblay looks disapointed :) [William Hollis]: darn, no ghost up here [Keeper]: The dining room has a few mingling guests. More than any other room since that's where the alchohol is. [William Hollis]: "oh well, back to the party" [Early Hutz]: "Let's go down and mingle." [Bernard Tremblay]: good idea [Keeper]: Everyone jumps as they hear a very loud scraping metal noise [Early Hutz]: Looks at the minglers for someone interesting Nick Johnson tries to locate the noise [Bernard Tremblay]: whoa! what was that? [Keeper]: Then there's a loud crash. [William Hollis]: "what an awful noise!" [William Hollis]: where is it coming from? [Bernard Tremblay]: someone is drunk already? [Keeper]: Simon: I thought they oiled that thing. [Nick Johnson]: Simon, what thing? [Keeper]: Simon: Attention everyone. Please come over here [Early Hutz]: Was that the guillotine? Nick Johnson goes where Simon wants [Keeper]: The party goers are gathering around him. Bernard Tremblay follows simon Early Hutz gathers around [Keeper]: Simon is at the now closed front door. With a dramatic flourish he opens it to reveal the way is now blocked by heavy iron bars Nick Johnson wears a bemused expression [Bernard Tremblay]: huh? [Keeper]: Simon: The house is set up to be sealed, though the mechanism was broken. (Early Hutz whispered to Bernard Tremblay): This is his way to keep out Lime. [Nick Johnson]: Did you set it up to be sealed, or was it already like this? William Hollis laughs [Keeper]: Simon: We repared it enough to be able to close the house off again, but now it can only be openned from the outside (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Early Hutz): good thinking [Keeper]: Simon: My men who closed us in have left and now we are trapped here with the ghosts until morning when they will return. [Bernard Tremblay]: surely we can go out a window? [Nick Johnson]: Clever, Simon. [Keeper]: Simon: If you look, the windows have bars now as well. [Keeper]: Simon: I thought it was. [Nick Johnson]: What about the upstairs windows? Barred, or can we take out chances and jump? [Bernard Tremblay]: do you have any tools here? [William Hollis]: "So, what kind of scares do you have planned for us Simon?" [Keeper]: Simon: Barred... I think Nick Johnson Examines the barred front doors [Keeper]: Simon: Me? I don't have any scares planned. They might have something in mind, though. [Bernard Tremblay]: They? [Keeper]: The bars about about an inch thick and they're very old. They're extremely rusted, though one bar is new and still shiney. [Keeper]: Simon: The ghosts of course. [Bernard Tremblay]: ahh... [Keeper]: Simon: We'll try to stir them up at midnight with another seance. Should be fun, right? [Bernard Tremblay]: i wish i had brought my axe ;) [Nick Johnson]: Do we have the honor of Madam Larina again? [William Hollis]: "i hope it goes better than the last seance i was at...." [Early Hutz]: Or Mr. Woollon [Bernard Tremblay]: . William Hollis pours himself another drink [Keeper]: Simon: Not this time. She's left for parts unknown. Tonight our medium is Barnabus Pilkington. Early Hutz looks at his watch [Keeper]: The crowd drifts apart again and begins going back to their mingling [Keeper]: It's about 6:30 [Early Hutz]: We've got some time to kill. Let's try to have some fun. [Bernard Tremblay]: sure [Nick Johnson]: I'm game Early Hutz examines crowd looking for a solo lady William Hollis looks at what the other guests are wearing [Nick Johnson]: Simon, I have a question [Nick Johnson]: Why was the house designed to trap people inside? [Keeper]: Early, you notice a lovely young lady dressed in colonial south outfit. Bernard Tremblay looks for a library with interesting books [Early Hutz]: To the lady: "I deduce that you are in need of some company." [Keeper]: William, you see a good mix of costumes ranging from the clever (there's a guy dressed as Calvin Coolidge!) to the mediocre (a ghost that's the standard sheet with eye holes). William Hollis leaves the dining room to wander through the house [Keeper]: Simon: It wasn't designed to trap people inside, it was apparently for burglers and the like. The control mechanism is in the basement, but it's broken and we had to manually trip it outside. [Nick Johnson]: Ahhhh. [Nick Johnson]: When was the wooden part of the house added on? [Keeper]: Early, the lady giggles and starts making small talk. Extremely small talk. [Keeper]: Simon: I'm not certain. I never visitted as a child so I don't know when it was changed. Early Hutz continues with a little banter, while watching the scene casually Nick Johnson nods [Nick Johnson]: Do you know how long the house has been unoccupied? [Keeper]: William, as you wander into the kitchen you suddenly give a shiver. Bernard Tremblay is still looking around to find some good books William Hollis stops and looks around [Keeper]: William, it's extremely cold where you're standing [Keeper]: Simon to Nick: At least fifteen years, maybe more. Nick Johnson nods [Keeper]: William, you don't see anything odd here, it's just cold. Almost sub-zero [Nick Johnson]: I think I'll have a look around William Hollis walks back to the dining room [Keeper]: Bernard, where are you looking for books [Keeper]: William, before you take three steps the temperture returns to normal. Nick Johnson moves over to examine a barred window [Bernard Tremblay]: i'm wandering around, looking for a library, hoping to find something good to read for later William Hollis goes over to simon [Keeper]: Well, you can check the ground floor or upstairs. [William Hollis]: "Simon, mind if i ask you some questions?" [Bernard Tremblay]: i'll check upstairs [Keeper]: Simon: Go right ahead [Keeper]: Nick, the bars seem firm [William Hollis]: "What do you know about the history of this house?" [Keeper]: Bernard, roll Nick Johnson follows Bernard upstairs DICE for Bernard Tremblay: (1d100) : 1d100=88 = [ 88 ] [Keeper]: At the top of the steps Bernard stumbles and falls backward! Bernard Tremblay screams [Nick Johnson]: How close am I? [Nick Johnson]: Can I try to catch him? [Keeper]: Simon: Not too much. My great uncle owned it and when he died he left it to me. [Keeper]: You're about five steps behind him [Keeper]: You can catch him [Keeper]: Or it's possible to catch him I should say [Nick Johnson]: I catch him [Keeper]: Roll, please [Nick Johnson]: Or I try to DICE for Nick Johnson: (1d100) : 1d100=12 = [ 12 ] [Keeper]: You got him [Bernard Tremblay]: nice :) [Nick Johnson]: Easy Bernard [Bernard Tremblay]: thanks, Nick [William Hollis]: "heh....looks like someone had a little too much to drink already" Early Hutz says "Excuse Me" to the lady and runs to base of the stairs to see what the commotion was [Nick Johnson]: You've only had one drink :) [Bernard Tremblay]: to keeper: was I pushed somehow? (Keeper whispered to Bernard Tremblay): You didn't feel anyone push, but it did feel something shift under you. [Bernard Tremblay]: hey, i'm not drunk, people [Bernard Tremblay]: it's almost as if the floor shifted under me [Nick Johnson]: Really? [Bernard Tremblay]: yeah William Hollis turns back to Simon, "Simon, do you know about that cold spot near the kitchen, it's freezing over there" [Keeper]: Simon: A cold spot? Really? I told you we'd get some good stuff tonight. [Nick Johnson]: Bernard, are you goint to go up again? [Early Hutz]: You know, we really should have brought a photog here [Bernard Tremblay]: of course [Bernard Tremblay]: i'll keep my hand on the railing(sp?) [Nick Johnson]: Might I suggest you go slowly? [Keeper]: Alright, this time you make it up safely. [William Hollis]: "yeah, Simon, is the a photographer from the magazine with us tonight?" Nick Johnson follows Bernard up slowly and deliberately Early Hutz follows Bernard and Nick up the stairs. [Keeper]: Simon: There is one around, but you can't take pictures of cold spots. [William Hollis]: "Well, you never know what might turn up" [Bernard Tremblay]: you're at the top of the stairs, will :) [Keeper]: The landing has a stone wall directly opposite of it and then a short hallway with four doors that runs almost the length of the house Nick Johnson walks to the side of the top of the stairs and examines the floor [William Hollis]: "wow, i was teleported and didn't even notice it" [Bernard Tremblay]: lol [William Hollis]: heh... [Keeper]: +=_V=== ] [Bernard Tremblay]: sorry, i stand corrected [Keeper]: That's a quick hallway map. :) [Bernard Tremblay]: i'll take the left door [Keeper]: The + is a door at the end, the _ is a door, the V is the stairs, and there are two doors at the other end. [Keeper]: As you enter that room a stench overpowers you. Early Hutz follows Bernard Bernard Tremblay retreats from the room quickly [Keeper]: The entire room is charred and the room is blackened. William Hollis goes up the stairs to see what the others are up to Nick Johnson is still examining the floor at the top of the stairs [Early Hutz]: What type of stench? Rot? [Keeper]: A door on the adjascent wall leads into the stone section of the house, but you notice that it is extremely thick. [Bernard Tremblay]: this room stinks! [Keeper]: More like burned flesh and hair. [Nick Johnson]: What does it smell like Bernard? Nick Johnson walks down to the room where Bernard is Early Hutz continues into burnt room and looks around [Bernard Tremblay]: smells of death Nick Johnson follows Early, and looks around [Keeper]: There little furnature in this room. Apparently Simon thought (correctly) that not many people would want to be in there for long. [Bernard Tremblay]: *ooc* did you hear the sound i made with webrpg? [Nick Johnson]: *ooc* having sound card troubles, so no :( [Early Hutz]: *ooc* yes [Bernard Tremblay]: k [William Hollis]: *ooc*yes [Keeper]: There is a fireplace and two chairs. Nick Johnson examines the fireplace [Keeper]: *ooc* no, but I turned the sound off. ;-) Early Hutz fights off stench and examines the fireplace William Hollis goes into the hall at the top of the stairs and looks into the room that the others are in [Keeper]: The ashes of the last thing burned in it are still there. There's some paper scraps. Bernard Tremblay looks closely at the thick door [Keeper]: Roll Early DICE for Early Hutz: (1d100) : 1d100=28 = [ 28 ] Nick Johnson grabs the scraps [Keeper]: The door is really burned, worse than the rest of the room. When you touch it your fingers come back with ash covering them. Nick Johnson examines the scraps of paper [Keeper]: You find a glint of white in the fireplace, Early. It appears to be a bone fragment Early Hutz picks up bone fragment Early Hutz examines bone fragment [Keeper]: The writing is almost unintelligiable on most of them. But here and there you get a bit of a word. [William Hollis]: "have you found anything guys?" [Nick Johnson]: Anything interesting? [Keeper]: Unfortunately most of the words don't connect together with odd consonants being next to each other. Bernard Tremblay opens the thick door Nick Johnson shows William the scraps of paper [Nick Johnson]: "Unfortunately, this doesn't make alot of sense" [Keeper]: A party guest dressed as a monk walks into the room, then his face crinkles up and he hastily backs out. [Keeper]: Roll for me Nick William Hollis shakes head "no, it doesn't" DICE for Nick Johnson: (1d100) : 1d100=96 = [ 96 ] [Bernard Tremblay]: let me take a look at these, i might be able to decipher it Nick Johnson hands them to Bernard [Keeper]: You can't make heads or tales of any of this. [Keeper]: Go ahead and roll Bernard [Early Hutz]: "I found this. It looks like a bone fragment, but I'm trying to figure out of what." DICE for Bernard Tremblay: (1d100) : 1d100=91 = [ 91 ] [William Hollis]: "let me give it a shot Bernard" [Keeper]: Roll Early, as well Nick Johnson takes a look at the bone fragment DICE for Early Hutz: (1d100) : 1d100=73 = [ 73 ] Bernard Tremblay give the scraps to will William Hollis examines the scraps [Keeper]: You really have no idea what animal it came from [Bernard Tremblay]: might as well take a look at that fragment too, heh? [Keeper]: Roll William [Nick Johnson]: Anatomy is not one of my strong points [Early Hutz]: This could be human, but it could also be a rat bone. [Keeper]: Willaim, you think it might be a cypher. Early Hutz hands fragment to bernard [Bernard Tremblay]: let me look, guys DICE for Bernard Tremblay: (1d100) : 1d100=84 = [ 84 ] [William Hollis]: "Hmm....i think this may be a cypher, guys" [Nick Johnson]: Interesting. [Bernard Tremblay]: hmm, really? [Nick Johnson]: I wonder if Simon planted it? [Keeper]: After all, there's no other way word fragments like "NYOG" and ""TSTL" can form [William Hollis]: "I wonder what it could mean" [Bernard Tremblay]: yeah, it doesn't seem french, english, german or latin [Keeper]: Roll Nick about the bone DICE for Nick Johnson: (1d100) : 1d100=50 = [ 50 ] [Keeper]: There's just too little here for you to be certain, Nick [William Hollis]: "let me see that bone fragment as well...." [Nick Johnson]: "Dunno what this bone is" [Early Hutz]: "If I don't get out of this stench, I'm going to lose the deposit on my costume." [William Hollis]: "anyone else what to take a look at these scraps?" Nick Johnson laughs [Early Hutz]: I'll look at them - in the hall [Keeper]: Roll William for the bone Nick Johnson follows Early out into the hall [Bernard Tremblay]: to keeper: can i open the thick door or is it stuck? [Keeper]: William, you're pretty sure it belonged to a squirrel. [Keeper]: You can open the thick door [Bernard Tremblay]: i'll do so [William Hollis]: "hey guys, i think this bone belongs to a squirrel....poor thing" [Nick Johnson]: "Interesting. Simon said no one had been here" [Early Hutz]: Rats with fuzzy tails. Who has the paper? [Nick Johnson]: "So he's either planted this, or someone has" [Nick Johnson]: "Been here, I mean" [William Hollis]: "i have the paper" [Keeper]: As you open the door you see that it is close to four inches of solid oak. [Early Hutz]: May I see it? [Bernard Tremblay]: wow Nick Johnson gets the paper from William and hands it to Nick Nick Johnson err, hands it to Early William Hollis hands the paper scraps to Early Early Hutz examines the paper scraps [Keeper]: The door comes open and you can also see that the walls in the stone section of the house are close to three feet thick. [William Hollis]: "that's some door there" [Keeper]: But behind that door is one of the most impressive libraries you've ever seen. [Bernard Tremblay]: this is like a castle! [Nick Johnson]: "Early, I'm going to go have a look at that Door" [Bernard Tremblay]: eureka! :) Nick Johnson goes to the door [Keeper]: Early, go ahead and roll again DICE for Early Hutz: (1d100) : 1d100=9 = [ 9 ] Bernard Tremblay rushes in and looks at the books [Nick Johnson]: "You just have to stand the stench to get in" Nick Johnson enters the Library William Hollis peers into the doorway "wow, a library!" [Keeper]: You can be certain early that it's no language that you know and that you don't know what it was supposed to say originally. William Hollis runs into the library and begins scanning the book titles [Keeper]: The library is two stories tall and you're on the second floor. Nick Johnson is scanning a different section of the Library than William [Early Hutz]: "This is gibberish." Follows others into library. [Keeper]: A stairway leads down to the ground floor from here Bernard Tremblay looks in the top section of the library [Keeper]: Apparently this section of the library is where the books on philosophy were stored. You see titles by all the famous philosophers of the ancient world on the shelves [Nick Johnson]: "I'm going to go down and have a look round on the 1st floor of the Library" [Keeper]: Hang on a sec, guys Nick Johnson heads down the steps [Nick Johnson]: sorry William Hollis goes to another section of the library [Keeper]: ARG! Telemarketters [Bernard Tremblay]: lol Nick Johnson casts a deathspell on telemarketers [Early Hutz]: Send a cthulhu at them [Keeper]: I wish [Keeper]: Okay, the library is packed solid with books on just about every topic you can think of. Only the New York Public Library and some college libraries have [Keeper]: more than this [Bernard Tremblay]: this is a gold mine, guys! [Early Hutz]: What's the general layout? Rows of shelves? Only on the walls? [Nick Johnson]: Am at the 1st level? William Hollis walks to what seems to be the middle of the library and looks around the room for anything that looks interesting [Bernard Tremblay]: we should ask Simon to take care of thse books, it would be a shame if something happened to them... [Keeper]: The walls and a row of shelves on the second floor; walls and lots of rows on the first with a reading area. [Keeper]: Nick, sure [William Hollis]: "yes, i should ask him if i could borrow a few as well..." [Nick Johnson]: I look around for an occult section [Bernard Tremblay]: if you see any german or latin books, tell me, guys [Keeper]: If you want to look for something you're going to have to ask for it. There's just too much here to do a random search. [William Hollis]: i'll look for the occult section as well [Bernard Tremblay]: well, how are the books arranged? randomly or alphabetically? [Keeper]: The occult section seems especially thick. Nearly the entire east wall of the library downstairs is dedicated to books on the subject [Nick Johnson]: "Hey guys, this is incredible" [Keeper]: Alphabetically by author in topical sections [Bernard Tremblay]: nice [Bernard Tremblay]: what, nick? [Early Hutz]: Can I scan book spines for strange combinations of consonants? [Nick Johnson]: "A gigantic occult section down here" [Keeper]: Sure, give a roll DICE for Early Hutz: (1d100) : 1d100=4 = [ 4 ] [William Hollis]: "i wonder if there are any books about this place" Bernard Tremblay runs to nick and drools at the sight Nick Johnson looks for an interesting occult book too DICE for Nick Johnson: (1d100) : 1d100=85 = [ 85 ] Bernard Tremblay looks too DICE for Bernard Tremblay: (1d100) : 1d100=44 = [ 44 ] William Hollis scans the titles of the occult section for something interesting [Nick Johnson]: "William, we will have to ask Simon what he knows" [Keeper]: Early, in the occult section you find a book entitled "On the Cult of Nraggth" that has some of the odd matching words. [William Hollis]: "well, Simon already told me he doesn't know much about this place, but maybe he knows more than he is letting on" Early Hutz removes book [Nick Johnson]: "Its not out of the realm of possibility. You know Simon" [Early Hutz]: Take a look at this fellas. Looks like the writing on the scraps. Nick Johnson looks at the book Early has [Nick Johnson]: "Interesting" Bernard Tremblay looks at the book in early's hands William Hollis walks over to Early and glances at the book Early Hutz opens book to see what language it's in [Keeper]: William, you locate a thick book entitled "Witches and Their Role in Modern Times". The book may have been written in 1600's from the look of the age. [Keeper]: The book is in English William Hollis removes the book from the shelf and pages through it [Early Hutz]: Do I have any knowlegde of the Cult of the Nraggth? Bernard Tremblay continues to scan the books in the occult section [Keeper]: It's the account of an explorer in South American finding a cult that worshiped a terrible god. Rather sketchy in the details. [Keeper]: You've never heard of the cult before William Hollis looks through the witch book for anything on squirrels or anything else that catches my interest Nick Johnson examines Early's book to look for details about rituals [Early Hutz]: Is it small enough to fit in one of my Sherlock Holmes coat pockets? [Keeper]: There's a brief comment that Witches will sometimes sacrifice squirrels to the dark man if there's nothing else available. [Keeper]: Bernard, you locate a book entitled A Factual Account of the Occult William Hollis looks up any other references to the "dark man" [Keeper]: No, the book is folio sized and will definitely not fit Bernard Tremblay scans the book for unusual stuff [Keeper]: The "dark man" appears to be another name for the devil. The book says that he shows up at covens to take part in their ceremonies. Early Hutz Flips through the book looking for "NYOG" or "TSTL" [William Hollis]: "guys, this book i have here says that witches sometimes sacrifice squirrels to the devil" [Keeper]: Bernard, your book takes a very skeptical approach to the occult attempting to disprove a variety of phenomina. [Bernard Tremblay]: ok, i'll put it down on the floor and look for another [Bernard Tremblay]: "really, will?" William Hollis looks through the book to find out the method of sacrifice they use [Nick Johnson]: "Interesting" [Keeper]: Nick, there's some comments about wild dancing before the flames and sacrificing their enemies [Nick Johnson]: "Hmmmm. The cult would sacrifice their enemies to their god" [Keeper]: William, the book claims that the witches have a different method for each ceremony. Sometimes burning, sometimes chocking, sometimes stabbing. [Bernard Tremblay]: guys, let's go get some chairs, i think the party will be spent here :) [Nick Johnson]: "I want to check out the rest of the house" [Early Hutz]: But there's no booze in here. [Keeper]: *THUMP* *THUMP* *THUMP* *THUMP* [Bernard Tremblay]: everything can be brought here :) [William Hollis]: "what was that?" Nick Johnson looks around the room to try and find the noise [Keeper]: (that was my poor attempt at sound effects. :) Bernard Tremblay looks at the "stench" room [William Hollis]: lol Early Hutz looks around [Keeper]: Nick, you locate a stack of books perhaps four feet high. [Bernard Tremblay]: to keeper: is the sound coming from the stench room? [Keeper]: It wasn't there a few minutes ago Nick Johnson examines the stack of books [Keeper]: The books have definiely come off the shelves. [Nick Johnson]: "Uhh, where did this come from?" [Nick Johnson]: Are they neatly stacked? [Early Hutz]: I think they came from the shelves. [William Hollis]: "looks like from those shelves there" [Bernard Tremblay]: the ghosts want us to read them, mayhaps? [Keeper]: Very tightly stacked. [Early Hutz]: What's the top book? Nick Johnson picks up the top book in the pile [Keeper]: The books are from the fiction shelves William Hollis examines the stack of books [Keeper]: The top book is Dicken's The Pickwick Papers Bernard Tremblay does the same [Nick Johnson]: "Hmmm, Dickens" [Early Hutz]: "No ghost is forcing me to read Dickens!" William Hollis picks a book at random from the stack [Keeper]: All of the books are fiction and all from seperate authors [Nick Johnson]: can I tell what shelf the books come from? Early Hutz returns to scanning Nraggth book for "NYOG" or "TSTL" Bernard Tremblay checks to see if they are alphabetically sorted in the stack [Keeper]: The two shelves on either side both have gaps that each of the books would fit into [Keeper]: The letters are not part of those books Nick Johnson thumbs through the Dickens book [Keeper]: You begin nodding off immediately. [Nick Johnson]: :) Nick Johnson looks to the shelf where the Dickens book would go [Keeper]: Wait, that's not right. ;-) It's a nice edition with several prints from the magazine when it was original published, but that's it. [Keeper]: Fits nicely in the "D"'s [Nick Johnson]: I'll examine the books around it, and the shelf William Hollis looks to see if there are any other doors to the library besides the one we came in [Keeper]: There's only that one entrance that you can see Bernard Tremblay goes back to the occult section and looks for other interesting books William Hollis scans the shelves for a book on cyphers [Keeper]: William, once you find the right section you see there are several available Early Hutz looks at his watch [Keeper]: Early, it's almost 9pm [Keeper]: Simon enters the room. Nick Johnson examines the other side of the shelf where Dickens belongs William Hollis takes as many books of the cypher books as he can hold and walks over to the table [Keeper]: Simon: There you are, I thought you might be hungry [Keeper]: Simon: Come to the kitchen and get yourself something to eat [Nick Johnson]: "Simon, what happened in the charred room?" [Early Hutz]: I'm famished! And thirsty! [William Hollis]: "Simon, what happened to that one room? [Keeper]: Simon: You've got me. Certainly looks spooky, though. Bernard Tremblay looks at Simon and says: Simon! this library is a gold mine! [Nick Johnson]: "We found a bone fragment in the fireplace" [Early Hutz]: Smells even spookier [William Hollis]: "i hope you don [William Hollis]: don't mind us looking at these books [Keeper]: Simon: Not at all. [Early Hutz]: Let's follow Simon and get some grub, gentlemen [Nick Johnson]: "William, I'd like you to show me that chill spot" [Bernard Tremblay]: allright, we can always resume later [William Hollis]: "sure William Hollis takes one of the cypher books along to browse through while eating Bernard Tremblay moves out of the library [Keeper]: Simon: You know, you should show that fragment to Cliff Sutherland. He's a doctor and might know where it comes from. [Nick Johnson]: "Simon, it seems your ghosts have a thing for Dickens" [Keeper]: Simon: Not a Christmas Carol, I hope. [Nick Johnson]: "Pickwick Papers" Early Hutz follows Bernard. William Hollis heads out of the library for the kitchen Nick Johnson follows Early (Early Hutz whispered to Bernard Tremblay): Simon seems odd tonight, doesn't he? [Keeper]: Simon's walking with everyone. Bernard Tremblay makes his way down the stairs very carefully [Keeper]: Simon: Never could get into that, myself. Too dry (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Early Hutz): yeah, but i can't quite get what's bothering him [Keeper]: Simon: Watch your step, there's a loose floor board apparently at the top of the stairs [Early Hutz]: When you get paid by the word, you tend to get wordy and boring. William Hollis pages through the cypher book as he walks [William Hollis]: "now you tell us..." Nick Johnson examines the floor at the top of the stairs [Keeper]: Simon: I didn't know until this evening. It wasn't loose when we cleaned the place up for the party. [William Hollis]: "that room back there could have used a bit of cleaning." [Bernard Tremblay]: or should have been locked ;) [Keeper]: Simon: We tried, but the stench wouldn't come out. Better to keep the door closed on that one we thought. William Hollis nods [Bernard Tremblay]: did you know about the library, Simon? [Keeper]: You're all in the kitchen now where a servent was just about to take care of the last of the chicken. [Nick Johnson]: "Woah there" [Keeper]: Simon: Well, not before I came up here. It is a nice one, isn't it? I think I'm going to donate it to a college somewhere and get them to put my name on the building [Nick Johnson]: "Simon, ever the philanthropist" [Early Hutz]: Mind if I scavange the shelves for a few books for my collection, first? (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Early Hutz): *ooc* any idea how long we'll play? is there a set time to stop? [Nick Johnson]: "To tell you the truth, Simon, I wouldn't mind that either" [William Hollis]: "i would like to do that as well if it is possible" [Bernard Tremblay]: same here (Early Hutz whispered to Bernard Tremblay): I don't know. It wasn't discussed. [Keeper]: Simon: I suppose, but sparingly. I don't want it picked clean like we're about to do with this foul. [Nick Johnson]: "I've always had a thing for the Occult, and it is really a nice library" Early Hutz gets some bird [William Hollis]: "i don't think you ordered enough food Simon, what would have happened if all the guests you were expecting showed up? Nick Johnson has some Chicken [William Hollis]: smiles Bernard Tremblay gets some food and eats quickly [Keeper]: Simon: We did have more, but when you don't have a handy icebox to store things in you take the problems as a blessing. William Hollis gets a plate of food [Nick Johnson]: "Have you considered trying to get electricity for this place?" [Keeper]: A man dressed in judicial robe walks into the room. [William Hollis]: "oh, i want to show you guys where that cold spot was" [Nick Johnson]: "I imagine it would cost a pretty penny" [Keeper]: Simon: Ah, this is Dr.Sutherland I was telling you about. [Keeper]: Sutherland: Hello, gentlemen [Nick Johnson]: "Hello Dr Sutherland. Hold on, William, I want to hear his opinion on the bone" [Bernard Tremblay]: pleased to meet you, sir [Early Hutz]: Doctor! We've got something we'd like you to look at, if you don't mind. Early Hutz shakes hands with Dr. [Keeper]: Sutherland: A bone you say? Well, I can tell you if it's human, but I'm not a veternarian [William Hollis]: "sure thing, Hello Dr. Sutherland, nice to meet you" [William Hollis]: "it looks to me like a squirrel bone, but i'm not sure" [Keeper]: Sutherland, shakes the hands and makes more specific greetings. [Keeper]: Sutherland: May I see it, please? [Early Hutz]: (who has it?) [Keeper]: William does because he was the one who decided it might be a squirrel William Hollis finds the bone fragment and hands it to the doctor [Early Hutz]: Give him the bone, Will. [Keeper]: Sutherland: Hmm... may I see that magnifiying glass? (He snatches it away before Early can respond) Well, it's definitely human. [Early Hutz]: Uhh . . . sure. Take it. [Nick Johnson]: "Can you be sure?" [William Hollis]: "oops, oh well." [Keeper]: Sutherland: Part of a foot, but the owner was either very short or a child. [Bernard Tremblay]: a child, you say? *shivers* [William Hollis]: "what was it doing in that room?" [Early Hutz]: Can you tell the age of the bone? [Keeper]: Sutherland: Not absolutely; it could be some kind of monkey I suppose, but that seems less likely. [Nick Johnson]: "Simon, I have to ask: did you put the bone in the fireplace?" [William Hollis]: "hey Simon, are you sure you're telling us everything you know about this place?" [Keeper]: Sutherland: It's defintiely not recent. At least more than a year, but that's all I can tell. [Keeper]: Simon: I'm as surprised by it as much as you, but it certainly is getting more interesting. I have to go and tell everyone else what you found. [Keeper]: Simon is almost giddy at the discovery. [William Hollis]: "are you sure that's wise?" [Early Hutz]: Before we leave, let's remember to have the photog take some shots of that room and fireplace [Nick Johnson]: "Good idea, Early" [Nick Johnson]: "The Library, too" [Keeper]: Simon: Why would it be a problem. This is supposed to be a Halloween party, after all. Bernard Tremblay stands up and goes to get another drink [Keeper]: Simon heads off (shivers as he passes through the spot for a moment) and moves on. [William Hollis]: "yeah, but finding a human bone fragment in that room....." Nick Johnson Examines the spot where Simon shivered [Keeper]: It's freezing right there. Like sticking your arm against a block of ice when you reach into it. Nick Johnson Examines the floor and ceiling at the spot [Keeper]: The floor and ceiling are clean around the cold spot. Bernard Tremblay comes back with a drink in hand and watches as the others examine the spot Early Hutz goes to see what Nick's doing [Early Hutz]: What are you looking at, Nick? William Hollis shrugs, and looks through the cypher book again [Nick Johnson]: "The cold spot. The floor and ceiling are clean in it" [Nick Johnson]: "I wonder what room is above this?" [Bernard Tremblay]: hmm [Bernard Tremblay]: let's go check [Keeper]: Hollis, make a roll for me. I think you've studied it enough to make an attempt Bernard Tremblay heads to the top floor Nick Johnson follows Bernard [Keeper]: There's definitely not enough of the cypher in the fragments you have to be able to determine anything. Doing a letter usage comparison doesn't help as there's no letter with a signifigant difference. [Early Hutz]: Earl follows B & N, but with a stop at the bar. [Keeper]: Early, make a roll for me DICE for Early Hutz: (1d100) : 1d100=28 = [ 28 ] William Hollis sighs, and follows the others [Keeper]: You're alright for now, but every time you get another drink you're going to have to roll your CONx3 or you're drunk. Okay? [Early Hutz]: OK - but this is only #2 [Bernard Tremblay]: it's my second drink, should i roll too? [Keeper]: Never mind then. I was thinking you've been visiting the bar heavily. [Keeper]: Let's say above four. There's no rule for getting drunk in Cthulhu that I know of. ;) [Bernard Tremblay]: ok :) [William Hollis]: "i'm heading back to the library to see if i can do anything else with that cypher, if you find anything come get me. [Nick Johnson]: "Ok William" [Keeper]: Alrighty then. As you open the door to the room above the kitchen you discover it's a study. But it's been ransacked. [Bernard Tremblay]: hmm Early Hutz looks around for a cold spot Nick Johnson examines the room closely [Keeper]: Early, you don't feel a cold spot here. William Hollis heads back to the library and pours over the other cypher books [Bernard Tremblay]: i guess the house is not so secure after all [Nick Johnson]: "Well, Simon said it had been empty for so long" [Early Hutz]: There's no cold spot in here. It must be confined to the kitchen. [Keeper]: Papers are scattered about the floor and the pictures have been pulled from the walls. [Keeper]: The desk has been overturned [Nick Johnson]: "It was probably left unlocked" Nick Johnson examines the desk [Bernard Tremblay]: yeah, probably [Nick Johnson]: "I wonder if there is a basement" [Bernard Tremblay]: good idea, let's look for one [Nick Johnson]: "lets check this room out first" [Keeper]: Someone has pulled all the drawers out of the desk. One of them has been smashed in where it had a false bottom. [Nick Johnson]: "Somebody wzs looking for something" Early Hutz looks at some random papers to determine what they are about. Nick Johnson Helps Early look at papers [Keeper]: Early, the papers are not like the ones you saw fragments of before. [Bernard Tremblay]: are there any other doors in the room? [Keeper]: However, they are definitely written in a code. [Early Hutz]: There's no funny writing in these papers. [Early Hutz]: Oops. Spoke too soon. [Nick Johnson]: "Lets collect these papers, and get William" [Keeper]: Apparently a code so complex that it's user wasn't good at it because there's quite a bit where some writing is scratched out and other writing is in it's place. [Early Hutz]: I'm going to go get william. William Hollis keeps reading the cypher books, taking notes of anything that may seem relevent [Nick Johnson]: "Ok Early" Early Hutz goes to get william from the library. [Nick Johnson]: are the picures from the wall lying on the ground? [Bernard Tremblay]: I'll go look for the basement, if any, guys [Nick Johnson]: err pictures? [Nick Johnson]: "Ok Bernard" [Keeper]: Early, as you pass through the burned room you feel like you're being watched [Keeper]: The pictures are on the ground Early Hutz pauses in burned room and looks around Nick Johnson examines all the pictures" Bernard Tremblay moves out of the room and goes downstairs to ask Simon if there's a basement [Keeper]: Early, you thought you caught a glimse of something in the corner of your eye, but there's nothing there. Early Hutz continues to library [Keeper]: The pictures are rather bland oil paintings that are typical of the region. Lot's of pictures of covered bridges and snowey forests. [Early Hutz]: "William. We need your cyphering skills." [Keeper]: Simon to Bernard: Yeah, in the kitchen there's a trap door that leads down to the celler [Nick Johnson]: Keeper, is there anything else of note in the room, and any other doors? [Keeper]: No other doors. William Hollis jumps up Nick Johnson goes to help simon look for a basement Nick Johnson goes to help Bernard look for a basement (duh) [William Hollis]: "don't do that! you scared me half to death Early!" [William Hollis]: "What did you find?" [Early Hutz]: Sorry. You're skills are needed. Bernard Tremblay goes to the bottom of the stairs and shouts: anyone for a little basement exploration? [Nick Johnson]: "Here I come" [Nick Johnson]: "Lets go find that sucker" [Early Hutz]: "Papers with a bunch of code on them. Plus some of the decoding materials" [Bernard Tremblay]: ok, there's a trap door in the kitchen, follow me [William Hollis]: "okay, show me where they are at" Nick Johnson gets out his flashlight and follows Bernard [Keeper]: Bernard, you're accosted by one of the rapidly growning number of drunk party goers. Early Hutz guides William to room, but stops first at burnt room William Hollis takes what he things is the most useful cypher book along [Keeper]: His speech is slurred, but he wants to go along with you. [William Hollis]: "what's wrong?" [Early Hutz]: Asks William, "does anything seem odd to you in this room" [Early Hutz]: "Other than the stench" [William Hollis]: "um....and that skull fragment we found?" [Nick Johnson]: to the drunk "There is a cool room on the second floor" William Hollis looks around the room again [Bernard Tremblay]: ok, come with us, dear fellow [Early Hutz]: "And the charring, yes." [William Hollis]: "not that i can tell" (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Nick Johnson): you don't want him with us, nick? [William Hollis]: "why do you ask Early?" (Nick Johnson whispered to Bernard Tremblay): I don't know, I just didn't know if you wanted to blow him off. If he wants to come, fine. [Early Hutz]: "I just had a strange feel when I came through here before. It was . . . " [Early Hutz]: "Never mind. It's not important." [Keeper]: Nick and Bernard, give me a roll DICE for Nick Johnson: (1d100) : 1d100=98 = [ 98 ] [Early Hutz]: "Let's get to those papers." (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Nick Johnson): ok, he might be fun to watch, hehe DICE for Bernard Tremblay: (1d100) : 1d100=71 = [ 71 ] [William Hollis]: "wait a minute" [William Hollis]: "i want to take another quick look around in this room" [Keeper]: As you're standing in the charred room, suddenly both doors slam shut William Hollis looks around the room one more time, paying special attention to the fireplace [William Hollis]: "Early....i hope you did that...." [Keeper]: Pounding sounds start coming from all around you Early Hutz reaches into pocket and puts hand on gun. [Early Hutz]: "That wasn't me." (Nick Johnson whispered to Bernard Tremblay): We could always feed the drunk to something nasty :) [Keeper]: They get tighter until they're focussed on the library door (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Nick Johnson): rofl William Hollis stands to the side of the door [Keeper]: Now there's a steady poinding coming from there Early Hutz stands on other side William Hollis puts his ear to the wall and listens (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Nick Johnson): this is fun so far [Early Hutz]: "Should I open it?" [Keeper]: Even through the stone you hear the pounding (Nick Johnson whispered to Bernard Tremblay): I agree. My first true pnp roll playing experience. [William Hollis]: "i don't know" (Keeper whispered to Bernard Tremblay): You guys hear nothing, okay [William Hollis]: "i'm not sure i want to find out what's behind it" Early Hutz Takes out gun and tries the door. (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Nick Johnson): really? cool, i think you're in good hands with Joel, he seems like a good game master William Hollis gets out his gun and loads some bullets (Nick Johnson whispered to Bernard Tremblay): Agreed. [Keeper]: Suddenly there's one final pound so strong you think the door will shatter, but then it stops [William Hollis]: "can you get the door open, Early?" Early Hutz opens door [Keeper]: The door swings open to reveal the library just as you left it [Early Hutz]: "That was . . . interesting." William Hollis looks into the library [Keeper]: Oh, and I think this actually calls for a SAN roll (finally). :) [William Hollis]: "ah....yes, it was..." [Bernard Tremblay]: *ooc* lol [Early Hutz]: (just a regular roll?) [Keeper]: That's right. I'm doing the math here DICE for Early Hutz: (1d100) : 1d100=22 = [ 22 ] DICE for Keeper: (1d3) : 1d3=1 = [ 1 ] [Keeper]: You've both lost one SAN point [Early Hutz]: "Whatever it was, it's over. Let's get to those papers." [William Hollis]: *ooc* dang my dice rolling skills suck :P [William Hollis]: "yeah, let's get out of here" Early Hutz takes william to room with papers [Early Hutz]: "Can you do anything with these?" William Hollis looks over the papers [Keeper]: Give me a roll William [Nick Johnson]: Keeper, what were Bernard's and my roll for? (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Keeper): tell us when we can act, Joel [Keeper]: Okay, with the help of the books you can, but the code is so complex that it's going to take you three hours of work to translate all of it. [William Hollis]: "what time is it?" Early Hutz checks watch (Keeper whispered to Bernard Tremblay): Okay guys. I think they're stuck for a moment [Keeper]: It's close to 11pm [Early Hutz]: "Almost 11" [William Hollis]: "it's going to take me awhile....i don't know if i should right now, it's almost time for the seance [Early Hutz]: "Do you want to try one or two pages?" [Nick Johnson]: We've decided the drunk can come with us to look for the cellar if he wants [William Hollis]: "sure, and then i can take a break for the seance" [William Hollis]: "some party this is going to be..." [William Hollis]: smiles [Keeper]: There's about twenty pages of code there for your information [Keeper]: Alright, so you guys are off to the celler Nick Johnson turns on his flashlight William Hollis starts working on the code Bernard Tremblay wishes he had brought one [Nick Johnson]: "Lets see what we can find in the cellar" [William Hollis]: "Early, you going to stay here or go find the others?" [Keeper]: It's a root celler with some space set aside for wine. [Keeper]: Those racks are empty, though [Early Hutz]: "I'm not sure where they went. They were in here when I left." [Bernard Tremblay]: oh... Nick Johnson examines the spot where the cold spot would be [Keeper]: On the far wall from where you descended there's a wooden door [Keeper]: You don't feel anything odd there Bernard Tremblay looks around and watches the drunk in case he stumbles [Nick Johnson]: "Lets try this door" [William Hollis]: "i think you should go find them and tell them about what happened" [Bernard Tremblay]: sure Nick Johnson tries to open the door [Early Hutz]: I'll look for them. [Bernard Tremblay]: hey, Mr! after you, if you please [William Hollis]: "try checking the basement, didn't they say they wanted to check the room under that cold spot in the kitchen?" [Keeper]: The door opens and you see a room that's filled with gears, counterweights, as well as large impressive looking switch [Early Hutz]: I'll try there Early Hutz goes to look for basement [Nick Johnson]: "Ahh, this must be the release mechanism" [Bernard Tremblay]: yup Nick Johnson examines all the gears, counterweights, and switch [Bernard Tremblay]: i'll look somewhere else, Nick [Nick Johnson]: "Ok" [Keeper]: It's incredibly complex, but everything appears to be in good repair [Bernard Tremblay]: try to determine if it broke normally or intentionnaly [Nick Johnson]: does the switch look like it works? Bernard Tremblay exits the room and goes to search for other doors William Hollis hums a tune while he works [Keeper]: It looks to be in the same condition as all the other machinery in the room. So it appears to be functional, though you can't be certain [Nick Johnson]: I'll leave it alone...for now. Anything else of note in the room? Early Hutz descends into cellar. Are my comrades nearby? [Keeper]: Roll a spot hidden for me [Keeper]: Nick DICE for Nick Johnson: (1d100) : 1d100=32 = [ 32 ] [Keeper]: Well, Early, you can see the light from Nick's flashlight easily. Early Hutz goes to Nick [Keeper]: Nick, you think you've spotted a stain on two of the large gears that isn't rust but blood [Nick Johnson]: any way to examine them closer? [Nick Johnson]: "Early, take a look at this. The mechanism looks like it might work, and I found some blood" [Keeper]: Well, you can get a better look, but I don't think it will tell you anything William Hollis checks the time [Early Hutz]: Odd. [Keeper]: It's after 11:30pm [Nick Johnson]: "Agreed" [Early Hutz]: This place is getting weirder. [Nick Johnson]: "Lets keep this in mind" [Early Hutz]: William and I were in the burnt room. [Keeper]: Simon's voice calls down into the celler; "Anyone there? We're starting to gather for midnight!" [Early Hutz]: We'll be there! [Nick Johnson]: "We'll be there in a second Simon" [Nick Johnson]: "Go on, Early" William Hollis gathers up the work he has done so far and heads to dining room [Early Hutz]: Suddenly a loud pounding noise started. [Early Hutz]: The doors had slammed shut. [Nick Johnson]: "A pounding noise?" [Keeper]: Simon is gathering everyone for the seance in the living room. Bernard Tremblay shouts: ok, coming! [Early Hutz]: Yes, and it eventually centered at the library door. [Nick Johnson]: "Wierd. Lets go to the seance. And don't mention the mechanism to simon" Bernard Tremblay joins the others in the gear room William Hollis pours himself a drink and heads into the living room [Early Hutz]: There was one last, very loud noise and it ended. [Early Hutz]: Agreed. [Nick Johnson]: "We'll check it out after the seance" Nick Johnson heads to the living room [Bernard Tremblay]: what's that about a noise, Early? Early Hutz goes to Simon [Early Hutz]: "I'll explain later. Let's see the seance." Bernard Tremblay shrugs and follows the others [Keeper]: The guests are all gathered for the seance in the living room Nick Johnson shuts off and pockets his flashlight (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Keeper): do you mind if we stop at around 5pm EST? [Keeper]: A few people are seated in chairs or on the couch, but for the most part people are standing (Keeper whispered to Bernard Tremblay): I was thinking at 4, but if everyone wants to go on we can. Bernard Tremblay finds a comfy chair and sits Nick Johnson decides to stand [Keeper]: Everyone give me a roll DICE for Nick Johnson: (1d100) : 1d100=26 = [ 26 ] DICE for Early Hutz: (1d100) : 1d100=64 = [ 64 ] DICE for Bernard Tremblay: (1d100) : 1d100=23 = [ 23 ] (Bernard Tremblay whispered to Keeper): ok, no problem, it's just that i gotta go around 5, i wasn't sure what time you wanted it to end (Keeper whispered to Bernard Tremblay): You think for a moment that you know the guy in the ghost costume [Keeper]: Simon enters the room; "We're ready to begin" William Hollis makes his way over to the guy in the ghost costume Bernard Tremblay stands and furtively goes to the ghost guy Nick Johnson stands near the guy in the ghost costume Early Hutz stands apart [Keeper]: At the top of the stairs Barnabus Pilkington appears dressed in a blue robe that is supposed to make him look like a wizard William Hollis whispers to the guy in the ghost costume "nice costume" (Bernard Tremblay whispered to William Hollis): hey, why do you roll the dice for the GM only? :) [Keeper]: The guy in the ghost costume says nothing [Keeper]: Barnabus descends the stairs. Nick Johnson mutters something about covering up (William Hollis whispered to Bernard Tremblay): that's the way i like to roleplay....don't like numbers to show (Bernard Tremblay whispered to William Hollis): ok, no problem Nick Johnson examines Barnabus closely [Keeper]: Brnabus: "Tonight is All Hallow's Eve, the most powerful night for the spirits." [Keeper]: Roll Nick DICE for Nick Johnson: (1d100) : 1d100=77 = [ 77 ] [Keeper]: Brnabus: This evening I will not being calling upon a specific spirit William Hollis keeps an eye on the guy in the ghost costume [Keeper]: Barnabus: Instead I will be calling forth just those spirits that exist here, with in this house. [Bernard Tremblay]: err, I don't think it's a good idea, sir! [Keeper]: Barnabus: I have done this a few times. (*there's some nervous laughter from the crowd*) [Keeper]: Barnabus: By Izzur and by Nraggth, I call upon the spirits who dwell within these walls to manifest their power before you! William Hollis examines Barnabus Bernard Tremblay looks around nervously [Keeper]: Barnabus repeats this chant, getting louder and louder with every iteration [Keeper]: Hollis give it a roll Nick Johnson edges near Barnabus [Keeper]: As Barnabus nears screaming the front door flies open and a wind sweeps through blowing out all the light Early Hutz puts hand in pocket Bernard Tremblay goes into a crouch Nick Johnson puts hand in flashlight pocket [Keeper]: Barnabus screams as if in pain Bernard Tremblay looks all around [Keeper]: No one can see anything because it is completely dark Nick Johnson listens intently Bernard Tremblay tries to go to a wall to put his back to it [Keeper]: The guests are murmuring nervously Nick Johnson looks toward the blownopen front door [Early Hutz]: "Whose got a light? Does anyone have a light?" [Nick Johnson]: "I do, Early" [Early Hutz]: Light this place up. [Nick Johnson]: "Simon, I thought we were locked in Nick Johnson turns on his flashlight [Keeper]: Simon has relit one of the oil lamps Early Hutz looks for barnabus [Keeper]: A female guest screams and faints dead away Nick Johnson looks for Barnabus [Keeper]: Barnabus is on the ground shaking. He's pale as a sheet Nick Johnson examines Barnabus closely Bernard Tremblay rushes to the female guest and check her pulse [Keeper]: Roll Nick Early Hutz runs to Barnabus and shouts, "Doctor!" [Bernard Tremblay]: *ooc* with first aid skill [Keeper]: Bernard, she's okay, but in shock [Bernard Tremblay]: to keeper: I'll do what is appropriate William Hollis examines barnabus [Keeper]: The doctor's busy as you can tell when you turn around to see the guy dressed as a ghost now has a butcher knife sticking out of his chest through the costume [Keeper]: Okay everyone Nick Johnson runs over to the guy in the ghost costume [Keeper]: We can stop here for this week or we can continue for about another fourty minutes [Bernard Tremblay]: I think it's a good cliffhanger for next week :) [Early Hutz]: This is a good point. [Nick Johnson]: Agreed [William Hollis]: "lets save it for next week [Early Hutz]: I may be out of town next weekend, though :( [Nick Johnson]: Oh crap, I'll be out of town for sure [Keeper]: Okay, Moyzon, I didn't think of it but can you send me the log you started. [Nick Johnson]: Just remembered [William Hollis]: we'll just kill off your characters then :P [Early Hutz]: d'oh! Nick Johnson P [Keeper]: Alright. Two weeks then if everyone's happy with the game so far [Nick Johnson]: I'm very pleased [Early Hutz]: Let's go with 2 weeks. [Bernard Tremblay]: guys, here's my ICQ# 14904200 [William Hollis]: find with me [William Hollis]: fine rather....heh... [Bernard Tremblay]: i'll save the log and send it if you want [Keeper]: I'd like to thank Harry Houdini, Conan Doyle, and William Castle for the inspiration for this adventure. :) [Bernard Tremblay]: :) [Early Hutz]: I can't remember my ICQ. If it's not in my profile on the forum, I'll add it. [Bernard Tremblay]: I'd like to thank you Joel for a fine job so far :) [Keeper]: I thought you turned it on at the beginning. About half-way through I realized I was going to need it. [Bernard Tremblay]: i did, Joel [Nick Johnson]: I agree Joel. Good job [Bernard Tremblay]: but i think i will need to log off webrpg so that it's saved [Keeper]: Okay, just e-mail it me Moyzan. You've been a great set of players [Bernard Tremblay]: If you guys want the log, just email me [Nick Johnson]: Ok Moyzan [Early Hutz]: Thanks everyone! [Bernard Tremblay]: you'll even have my whispers in bonus! lol [Nick Johnson]: In 2 weeks, gentlement [Bernard Tremblay]: yup, great players so far [Bernard Tremblay]: ok Peacedog [William Hollis]: great GM too ;) [Bernard Tremblay]: yup [Bernard Tremblay]: allright, cya in 2 weeks or in the forums :) [Nick Johnson]: or both :) [Early Hutz]: Later! [Bernard Tremblay]: take care! [William Hollis]: bye! Nick Johnson does the farewell Macarena [Bernard Tremblay]: *departs* [Keeper]: Goodye [Keeper]: bye [Nick Johnson]: bye [ ImLawBoy left the game ] William Hollis teleports out :)
